The Healthcare field has become more and more demanding of nurses and at the same time has required more independence by nurses necessitating better critical thinkers and clinical decision makers. To better prepare them for this ever increasing challenge, nursing schools must insure that graduates possess those critical thinking skills necessary to be successful and safe in healthcare today. For whatever reason, students entering the healthcare educational system today seem to possess fewer of these skills than previously. It is now the challenge of the healthcare educator to teach and evaluate these critical thinking skills. Numerous articles in Nursing have suggested that someone develop evaluation tools that would measure Critical Thinking core competencies in nursing using clinical decision making skills and clinical judgment as the cornerstone for this evaluation. These tests answer the request from nursing educators to develop tools that test Critical Thinking throughout the nursing education process. These tests meet and exceed the NLN Critical thinking outcome evaluation requirements. Arnett Critical Thinking “CT Tests” are UNIQUE Free response and Partial Credit exams, the FIRST of their kind in the nursing profession. These tools were designed using the latest strategies in testing today based on major findings from the literature in the fields of nursing, medicine and education. These tests are designed to assess an individual student’s ability to employ the following: critical thinking skills, decision-making, and good judgment to determine appropriate action for the patient. These tests do not evaluate the students competency in nursing knowledge, however CTLE, CTOE do report on nursing areas to assist the student to review. It is understood that to be an effective critical thinker you must have a good working knowledge of the subject matter. CTEE’s knowledge base is of a high school graduate. "The CT Tests"
The CT Tests” by Arnett Development Corporation are a UNIQUE Triad of tests. All three tests work together to give you a realistic picture of your student’s progress as a critical thinker. “The CT Tests” can be used separately as well as together. All three tests share the commonality of the 5 same CT Core Competencies. Each test has the same number of questions testing the same part of each CT core competency. they mirror each other. About the Test(s)These tests are FREE RESPONSE tests using the Partial Credit Model. All test questions have an ability level assigned from the Item Response Theory model by RASCH. These tests do not use the Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) format. The student must enter the desired response/action to the question with no prompts. Questions can have multiple correct answers. This maximizes the students ability to think critically without being prompted or guided to a response. This eliminates any guessing and you get a true picture of the students knowledge level and retention of information as well as their thought process. The questions in CTEE are keyed to the following areas: Critical Thinking Competencies, Partial Credit Summary & Blooms Taxonomy. The questions in CTLE & CTOE are keyed to the following areas: Critical Thinking Competencies, Nursing Process, Partial Credit Summary, Blooms Taxonomy, Content Areas, Categories of Client Needs & Systems. The student is evaluated in these areas. The ReportsIn addition to the student reports the school will also receive two additional reports: School Summary Report and Executive Summary Report. The school summary report includes an analysis of the following areas: Critical Thinking Competencies, Partial Credit Summary & Blooms Taxonomy. The executive summary report will include: Student name, ability level, partial credit, critical thinking, Bloom's Taxonomy. Processing Time & In House Rush
