The Healthcare field has become more and more demanding of nurses and at the same time has required more independence by nurses necessitating better critical thinkers and clinical decision makers. To better prepare them for this ever increasing challenge, nursing schools must insure that graduates possess those critical thinking skills necessary to be successful and safe in healthcare today. For whatever reason, students entering the healthcare educational system today seem to possess fewer of these skills than previously. It is now the challenge of the healthcare educator to teach and evaluate these critical thinking skills.

Seminar Overview

This seminar will describe the step-by-step process of teaching/evaluating students to increase their ability to think critically. This includes the ability to retain material, ability to work through a problem and make good clinical decisions. We will describe teaching methods to assist the faculty in fostering better learning and retention of materials and its use in critical thinking by your students. This includes such things as mind mapping, combinatorial reasoning, schema development, Socratic teaching, etc. This is a sequential process that needs to be continued throughout the nursing program. A building blocks approach must be used to master the concept of thinking critically. This seminar relates the six Core Competencies from the Delphi Study to Bloom's Cognitive Domain. This is useful in teaching the content and layering it through the curriculum. The Core Competencies are also related to the Nursing Process.

One of the major problems with students today is that multiple choice testing has decreased their ability to think critically. This testing concept limits the students thought processes and they only look at the information presented to them. As we move towards Clinical Simulation testing the issue of critical thinking / clinical decision making will have a major impact on the graduates ability to pass NCLEX. This seminar will detail the procedures to be used to integrate critical thinking / clinical decision making into your curriculum and the use of available measurement tools. These tools include CTOE, the rubric, the PPPT, etc.

This seminar will deal with all of the above issues to include the research project on critical thinking in nursing completed in 1998. The tool used i s the ADC Critical Thinking Outcome Evaluation (CTOE) which uses nursing situations with patients/clients requiring some action by the nurse. This project included 10,053 graduates in the study which was conducted over 6 months utilizing BSN, AD, Diploma & LPN/LVN graduates.

Define critical thinking / clinical decision-making as it relates to nursing.

Relate the Core Competencies to Bloom's Cognitive Domain.

Describe teaching strategies that will foster critical thinking by students.

Identify procedures for evaluation of critical thinking skills.

Identify current instruments available to nursing schools to assess critical thinking.

Review a critical thinking research project and recommendations.
Develop a template for evaluation of critical thinking / clinical decision making.

Deans, directors, faculty, curriculum committee members and anyone trying to teach and create curriculums containing critical thinking should attend.
